Experience flights

*All the Helicopter Experience Flights are dependent on the weather and may be cancelled at short notice. We strongly advise you to phone the Museum before starting your journey.

The Museum has recently published a 12-page booklet, compiled by Elfan Ap Rees, which is designed for members of the public who are taking their first helicopter flight or thinking of doing so. Simple drawings explain how helicopters work and why they are much safer than many people think. The booklet will be issued free of charge to passengers who book Museum Experience Flights. It is also being sold at the Museum bookshop and is available by mail order at £1.25. Bulk orders are available to other operators and training schools.

Summer Exhibition

A new Summer Exhibition for 2008, entitled "Rescue at Sea", opened, at The Helicopter Museum, on MAYDAY 1st May and will continue until the end of August. Aimed at younger children, as well as adults, it highlights the important role played by local coastguard agencies and lifeboat institutions.

Naturally it also explains the significant part that helicopters play in rescue operations at sea.

Help on the large scale displays has come from Weston Lifeboat Station with the loan of several artefacts for the exhibition.

The displays and a film show have been largely planned, co-ordinated and executed by Museum Operations Manager, Lee Mills. He has been assisted by Mary Fernlea (above right) who is a Volunteer at both the Helicopter Museum and at the Weston Lifeboat Shop. She said "It really is wonderful to see these two local charities working together and, as a part of this collaboration with the Weston Lifeboat, there are opportunities, within the exhibition, for visitors to donate money to this very worthwhile cause".

Facilities and Opening Times

The Museum has over 70 exhibits, all under cover, and a friendly café which serves Morning Coffee, Light Lunches and Afternoon Teas with home made cakes.

The Museum shop (HeliWorld) sells the largest range of Helicopter oriented books, magazines, models, model kits, toys and souvenirs in the UK. There is also a helicopter-themed outdoor play area for the under 12s.

On Open Cockpit Days (normally, but not always, the second Sunday in each month) our experienced and dedicated volunteers will be in The Museum's main hangar to talk to visitors and answer questions about the stunning collection of Helicopters.

The Helicopter Museum is 5 minutes from Junction 21 of the M5 and is open Wednesday to Sunday all year, 10.00 am - 5.30 pm (10.00 am - 4.30 pm November to March). Open daily throughout the summer school holidays from mid-July to the end of August.

Group discounts and free guided tours are available. Free parking. The Café is open to non-visitors to the Museum. Please phone 01934-635-227 for more information.

The Helicopter Museum is a registered charity with most of the work being carried out by volunteers. It receives no local or government subsidies, relying on visitor revenue, volunteer support and donations to cover its costs and overheads.
All the above events are at The Helicopter Museum except for Helidays which are on the Seafront at Weston-super-Mare.

Some Events specially for Members in 2008

The popular monthly "Pub Nights" for Members and Museum Volunteers are from 8.30 pm on the 3rd Tuesday of every month. Details of location from Dave Wallace on 01934-823312.

The proposed visit to Gloucestershire Airport, in 2005, was cancelled. It was hoped that it could be re-arranged for Autumn 2006 but this was not possible. A date in 2008 is being sought so it would be helpful to know names of members who are interested. Again, please talk to Dave Wallace on 01934-823312.
